Importing a Bill Of Material (BOM) with DO NOT INSTALL reference designator components that are either listed in the BOM or not listed in the BOM

The following outlines the importing of a Bill Of Materials (BOM) with Do Not Install (DNI) components that are either listed or not listed in the BOM.

Definition of Do Not Install (DNI) components:

Do Not Install (DNI) are components the have reference designator locations on the PCB assembly ( PCBA ) but are not being inserted on a certain revision of a PCB assembly ( PCBA ) build.

DNI's will be listed in some Bill Of Material's (BOM) and in other cases they may not be listed in the BOM.

There is various terminology to describe these components that are not installed such as Do Not Install (DNI), no-pop, no-fit, do not place (DNP), do not stuff (DNS), do not load (DNL). no placement (NP), do not place (DNP), do not stuff (DNS), do not load (DNL), etc.. We will be using Do Not Install (DNI) here.

The Unisoft software interprets DO NOT INSTALL / NO POPS (DNI) components in 2 ways. They either can be listed in the BOM or not listed in the BOM.

  1. If DNI components are not in the BOM than they are simply marked by the Unisoft software as having no part number and they are listed in the BOM import report created by the Unisoft software.

Click SAVE in the report above to save for future reference any DNI components that were not in the BOM but are in the CAD data.

Also go to https://www.unisoft-cim.com/dni-components.html for more information on how to identify, color, print and blink DNI components that are not in the BOM.

  2. If DNI components are listed in the BOM then those components are required to have a part number identifying it's status such as DNI or NOPOP.

On import of the BOM these part numbers and the DNI reference designators will be identified in the Unisoft software as having a part number of DNI.

DO NOT INSTALL / NO POPS (DNI) ISSUES:

The Unisoft BOM importer when it finds a part number in the indicated part number field specified in the BOM importer template will by default accumulate reference designators in the indicated reference designators field defined in the BOM importer template on subsequent lines until it finds the next new part number. The purpose for this is that BOM files may have several lines of part numbers especially for high quantity component counts with the same part number (for example: A BOM that has 100+ bypass capacitors with the same part number).

DNI component problems can occur if DNI components are included in the BOM but do not have part numbers because there is a potential that they may be associated with the previous part number from the indicated part number field defined in the BOM importer template. This sometimes occurs when a BOM is manually edited and the part number is simply deleted from the BOM to create a DNI component as in the example below.

In the example BOM above U4 would be grouped with the part number on the line above it and would be assigned a part number of 395422-01-9. If U4 was actually a DNI component that would be an error condition and the component U4 could be accidentally installed on the PCB. The Unisoft software on import of the BOM file will alert of this possible issue and will create a BOM import report (example follows) that indicates Part Number(s) the that have reference designators defined on multiple lines. The user can then check these part number(s) and edit the BOM as needed.
